Each one of us uses both verbal and nonverbal communications to express ourselves. Yet, mostly, we pay attention to verbal communication and disregard nonverbal communication. If we also understand nonverbal communications, then our understanding of others will be much better. Understanding of others leads us to adjust our communications accordingly, which help us to build relationships, achieve determined outcomes from communications, and influence others better.

Watch their Gestures

Some people gesticulate more than others. The more frequent and the more exaggerated the gestures, the more expressive a person is. People who are shy or introverted may use gestures, but they will be subtle.

Slapping of back or touching of arm are gestures of friendliness. If a person gives you a friendly touch during a conversation, it means that they like your personality. You may match their gesture to reciprocate, if you wish.

What Posture Tells You

The posture of a person, especially the shoulders and the manner of walking, expresses how a person feels about himself/herself. A confident person will stand upright, will not shy away from the limelight, and initiate conversations with strangers with ease. On the other hand, a person with low self-confidence may have crouched shoulders, talk little when with strangers, and avoid attention.

A good posture expresses confidence. Therefore, it is important to practice to gain a good posture, as it will subconsciously affect the impression you make on people.

Spot Signs of Nervousness

Most people will touch their nose, ears or hair when they are nervous. You will find that many people begin to mumble, stammer or talk very fast when nervous. They may focus their attention only to the people they know and disregard their surroundings. They may also try to get back into familiar surrounding where they were more comfortable. If you spot such signals, make an effort to help the person gain ease.

Know When You have Impressed Them

You have made an effort to impress a person. Now you want to receive the feedback from the other person on whether you have succeeded in your efforts or not. If the other person is impressed by you, s/he will mirror your body language or your choice of words or your manner of speaking. When a person begins to mirror you, you can be sure that you have influenced them successfully.

If you are effectively engaging a person, then you will find that his/her attention will remain on you. You can judge that from the eye contact. If a person will keep looking at you through a conversation, it means that s/he finds you interesting.

Observing the signals of the body is important to understanding how other people are reacting to your personality, your talk and/or your efforts. It will guide you to correctly adjust your communications so that you fulfil the purpose of the exchange.
